In 2019, we bought a brand new modest mountain house.
It wasn’t a grand gesture. It wasn’t a calculated investment strategy. It was simply a feeling — the kind that settles in your chest when the air turns cooler, when the mountains rise in soft blue layers, when the world feels quieter than it has in a long time.
We named it Hunker Inn.
Because that’s what the mountains invite you to do — hunker in, light a fire, pour something warm, and stay awhile.
Winter arrived first. Snow gathered along the rooftops and pine branches. The nearby ski resort came alive with laughter and movement, and our little house glowed at dusk like a lantern tucked into the hills. On a whim, we opened it for ski-season rentals. Guests came with scarves and stories, filling the rooms with joy before returning home — leaving behind both income and the quiet satisfaction of sharing something special.
Then summer unfolded.
Golf mornings under wide Carolina skies. Evenings that stretched long past sunset. A clubhouse hum that felt more like community than country club. The rhythm of mountain living became familiar — unhurried, elegant, deeply restorative.
Over time, people began calling Western North Carolina “the new Aspen.”
Perhaps they mean the elevation. The ski slopes. The growing whisper of luxury in the hills.
But what they’re really noticing is the atmosphere — that rare combination of refinement and authenticity. A place where boots and linen coexist. Where fireplaces glow in winter and golf carts glide across emerald fairways in summer. Where life feels expansive, yet intimate.

Convenient location: only 5 minutes to the ski slopes, shops, restaurants and brewery. Great value for this private new home at the end of a road. The back yard is completely private. Only 6 houses on the street. Over 1 acre all to yourself.

There are 2 bathrooms but only 1 shower. You must walk through the 2nd bedroom to get to the loft game room.

Drive 5 minutes to Beech Mountain Resort, home to some of the best skiing and snowboarding on the East coast. There are 17 trails and 8 lifts over 95 skiable acres. The season begins in November and runs through March.
4WD /AWD or snow chains are needed in the winter. Expect ice and snow as we are at 4,400 Feet above sea level. A four wheel drive or all wheel drive and/or snow chains are recommended in the winter anywhere you stay on Beech Mountain. The town does a good job of salting and scraping but they can get overwhelmed at times.
If you want snow chains the Exxon Station in Banner Elk will install them for you.
Guest access
You have the entire house all to yourself.
Please don't allow your pet on the furniture or beds because we have all white linens.
There are twin sheets and a comforter upstairs in the loft if you want to sleep on the small chaise lounge.
The pet fee is $90. for the total stay. You must add your pets at the time of making your reservation.
