The space Hillhouse is a large converted barn on a 24Ha farm, in the beautiful Dargle countryside, 12 kms from Howick. This rustic, charming property offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by indigenous forests, clean air, wildlife, and expansive views over Midmar Dam.
Accommodating up to 12 guests, Hillhouse is the perfect venue for large family gatherings, groups of friends, or special events.
Accommodation Details:
There are four bedrooms on the upper level, each with its own unique charm. Please note, the walls and floors upstairs are wooden, and sound may travel between the rooms. The main bedroom features a queen-sized bed and an en-suite bathroom. Three of the other bedrooms are furnished with a pair of single beds (please request if you would like them combined into a double), and one of these rooms is located at the top of the landing, offering less privacy. Three private rooms in total.
There is an open mezzanine dormitory area above the lounge, with four additional beds, ideal for children or teens. If you need more private rooms you may book Lakehouse as well as Hillhouse.
Living Spaces: Hillhouse offers a spacious, light-filled environment, perfect for large groups to relax and gather. The comfortable couches, woven carpets, and large dining tables create an inviting atmosphere for long, leisurely meals and cozy evenings by the fireside.
A fully equipped kitchen is available for all your self-catering needs. Enjoy outdoor dining with the braai facilities. For chilly winter nights, warming blankets are provided on the beds. Fine cotton bed linen and bath towels are supplied for your comfort.
Additional Services: Should you wish to have the house serviced during your stay, a staff member can tidy up in the morning. You can pay her directly.
Guest access Guests have access to the entire property. The Guesthouse and surrounding garden is private and for your use. There is ample parking for a couple of vehicles. We have a lovely children's play area below Hillhouse with a trampoline, swing and jungle gym. You are welcome to walk and cycle the 24 ha farm, enjoying the forests, the indigenous bush and the grassy hills. There is also a swimming pool at our private home which you are welcome to use. It is 20 meters from Hillhouse and please be aware it is unfenced.
Other things to note Hillhouse is a converted farm shed, rustic in nature and wonderfully unusual. The last 8km of the route is on a dirt road, which is best navigated by a vehicle with good ground clearance. While a 4x4 is not required, vehicles with low clearance may need to travel more slowly.
It is a self catering guest House, you will need to bring all your own food. Cleaning materials are provided. If you are a small group, we have another house to rent on the property - Lakehouse which sleeps 4.

We are in the heart of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands, which is rural countryside. Howick is the closest town - 12kms away. There are plenty of places to visit and activities available in the area - cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, canopy tours, sailing, water skiing. There are also world class restaurants and shops in the area. There is wonderful local produce - meats, cheeses, breads, beer and wine for you to fill the fridges and stay home to enjoy the farm.

Our closest petrol fill up on the R103 has general store called The Everything Shop, which has everything from milk to charcoal, bait, ice, bread and enamel kitchenware.
Visit The Old Mushroom Farm in the Karkloof, where the buildings have been converted and repurposed into work space for artisans and small local businesses. Home to Rock Paper Scissors shop, Homeslice Cafe, Big Slice Bakery. A beautiful and inspiring place to get early morning coffee and breakfast.
The Karkloof Farmers Market is open from 07h00 to 11h00 every Saturday, on the Karkloof road. Great for fresh locally made and grown food.
Midmar Dam resort (just 6kms to the gate or 2 kms as the crow flys) is great for picnics, sailing, swimming and gentle bike rides.
